Rising 2026 Seniors: How to find the senior photographer that is right for you - No, it is not too early to start thinking about this

EMP 2026 Senior Model Program will be opening soon. Too early to think about senior pictures??? No Way! Most seniors want their pictures taken either in the summer or fall. Therefore, photographers, including myself will book up sometimes months in advance leaving little wiggle room to reschedule due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. If you are a current high school junior or the parent of one, you should be thinking about your senior session now!

Finding the right senior photographer involves a combination of research, assessment, and personal preference. Not every photographer will be the right one for you. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you find the perfect photographer for your senior portraits:

  1. Define Your Style: Start by determining the style of senior portraits you prefer. Do you like traditional, formal portraits, or do you prefer a more candid, lifestyle approach? Or a combination of both? Do you prefer and in studio style or an outdoor on site location? Look through portfolios online or in magazines to get a sense of what styles resonate with you. I highly recommend Pinterest. Create a board, pin pictures you like; locations, lighting, poses; pin clothes, make up, props. This will help define the style and vibe that you are going for.

  2. Research Photographers: Use online resources such as Google, Instagram, or photography directories to find photographers in your area who specialize in senior portraits. Look for photographers whose style aligns with your preferences and who have positive reviews or testimonials from past clients.

  3. Review Portfolios: Take the time to thoroughly review the portfolios of photographers you're considering. Pay attention to the quality of their work, their use of lighting and composition, and whether their style matches the vision you have for your senior portraits. Most importantly, consistency matters. When you hire your photographer you need to know what you are getting. No surprises!

  4. Ask for Recommendations: Reach out to friends, family members, or classmates who have recently had senior portraits taken and ask for recommendations. Personal referrals can be a valuable resource for finding trusted photographers.

5. Discuss Pricing and Packages: During your consultations, be sure to inquire about pricing and the packages offered by each photographer. Make sure you understand what's included in each package and whether there are any additional fees or expenses you should be aware of.

Cheap is not always best. You get what you pay for. That doesn't mean you need to go with the most expensive photographer either. Obviously you want something that will fit into your budget. This is the one time in a high school seniors life that they deserve to be celebrated for reaching this milestone in their life. Senior portraits are an investment. You are paying for not only the portraits, or digitals, but you are paying for the photographers time, editing time, creativity, knowledge, equipment upkeep, etc. Ask about payment plans; some photographers, myself included will work with you.

  1. Consider Personality Fit: It's important to choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable and at ease during the photoshoot. Pay attention to how well you get along with each photographer during your consultations and trust your instincts when it comes to selecting someone you feel comfortable working with. Being comfortable during your session is so important to me. If you are not comfortable your pictures will show it.

  2. Review Contracts: Before making a final decision, carefully review the contract provided by your chosen photographer. Make sure you understand all terms and conditions, including payment schedules, cancellation policies, and usage rights for the photos.

  3. Make Your Decision: Once you've thoroughly researched and assessed your options, it's time to make your decision. Choose the senior photographer who best aligns with your style, preferences, and budget, and who you feel confident will capture the essence of this important milestone in your life.

By following these steps and taking the time to find the right senior photographer, you can ensure that you'll have beautiful portraits that you'll cherish for years to come.
